Asked to do a project in a classical theatre building I decided to embrace the thick walls, high threshold and 49 electrical flybars that can each go up and down individually.
For this, I needed to organize a temporary association of craftsmen and artists. I called it Decoratelier. Together we tried to answer the desire of the building.
For two years, we negotiated about what spaces we should show in that theatre building today.
We called those spaces Infini’s, traditionally the name for a painted backdrop in baroque scenographies
The goal was to make each Infini as flat as possible so they could all hang from the flybars without storage problems.
The result of this process was a four hour show in which fifteen different scenographies, fifteen different negotiations, appeared and disappeared one after the other.

Scenography, I learned by doing this project, is the negotiation of different desires turned into space.
A project by Decoratelier in collaboration with 15 correspondents
Upon the question “Which space do you think we need to show in the theatre today?”, 15 artists engaged in a conversation with scenographer Jozef Wouters and Decoratelier, which resulted in a series of 15 Infinis, each of them a complex landscape in search of answers. This programme booklet provides you with a guide to navigate through the evening.
